About the MRM2023/IUMRS-ICA2023

The MRM is the international conference launched in 2019 by the Materials Research Society of Japan (MRS-J) for promoting interdisciplinary materials crossing solid state physics, chemistry, materials science, and relevant discipline. It is a platform for high-level discussions on advanced materials research. The first meeting (in person) was held in Yokohama and the second meeting was at the same site as a hybrid due to the COVID-19. Both meetings were successful in scale (~40 symposia and ~1800 attendees) and quality: this success comes from excellent review talks by world-leading scientists, informative contributed presentations, and fruitful discussions on cutting-edge topics that transcended traditional disciplines.

The IUMRS-ICA, on the other hand, is one of the most important serial conferences of the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) and has been organized annually since 2008 by IUMRS members in Asia. In Japan, IUMRS-ICA was most recently held in Fukuoka in 2014, providing the opportunity for scientists, engineers, and students from not only Asia but around the world to exchange their recent achievements. A large number of researchers and students from across the world attended IUMRS-ICA, which has become a showcase for advanced materials research in Asia.
Under these backgrounds, the 3rd MRM will be held jointly with the historic IUMRS-ICA in Kyoto in 2023 as an international grand meeting (MRM2023/IUMRS-ICA2023) covering a broader range of fields. This is not a simple joint meeting of two conferences, but a large-scale conference (grand meeting) that merges the features of each to create new value. The organizing committee is pleased to invite scientists, engineers and students working in all areas that are connected with the Materials Science and Engineering from all over the world.

The Materials Research Society of Japan (MRS-Japan) was founded in March 1989, following the MRS International Conference on Advanced Materials held in Sunshine City, Ikebukuro, in May 1988, on the premise that interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary fields should be covered. Since its establishment, the MRS-Japan has promoted R&D and industrial application of advanced materials science and technology via the interdisciplinary research activities of scientists and engineers and their global collaborators.
In collaboration with the IUMRS, the MRS-Japan has organized international conferences and symposia under the cooperation with, such as the International Union of Materials Research Societies-International Conference on Advanced Materials (IUMRS-ICAM) held in Ikebukuro in August 1993 and in Yokohama, October 2003; the IUMRS International Conference in Asia (IUMRS-ICA) convened in Makuhari, in September 1997, in Nagoya, in December 2008, and Fukuoka, in August 2014; the IUMRS-International Conference on Electronic Materials (IUMRS-ICEM) held in Yokohama, in September 2012; and IUMRS- ICAM convened in Kyoto, in August 2017. MRS-Japan also cooperates with and actively participates in the IUMRS conferences.
In 2019, MRS-Japan hosted its first MRM, MRM2019, a pioneering platform in Japan that provides a platform for materials researchers from diverse backgrounds to discuss the latest scientific developments on advanced materials. MRS-Japan also organized the second MRM in Yokohama in 2021 to facilitate information sharing on proposed interdisciplinary topics. And the 3rd MRM will be held as a large scale conference (Grand Meeting) that will merge with IUMRS-ICA to create new value. We hope that participants from different disciplines will enrich the discussions on the proposed topics, initiate or strengthen international cooperation, and take actions consistent with the common goal of global use of advanced materials to achieve the SDGs.
